Meditation cushion hand embellished by VKG artisans depicting a mutka (a clay pot used to store dairy products) with a peacock on either side. The cushion is 16" in total diameter, with the embellished center panel measuring 10" in diameter. Note: Opting to avoid the added expense and shipping weight associated with sending cushions pre-stuffed from India, VKG offers these cushions unstuffed only. Please scroll down for a list of online sellers of buckwheat hull and kapok, the most popular fillings for meditation cushions (you should need 5-6 lbs buckwheat hull or about 2-3 lbs of kapok.

The mutka is symbolic of Krishna's childhood, during which time he would often steal butter from the local milkmaids. The child Krishna is known as Gopala or Makhun Chor (butter theif)!

According to Indiaprofile.com, "An absolutely textual image of the peacock is that it is part of the flora and fauna that serves the divine. Vrindavan the divine land, where lord Krishna, adorning a peacock feather, danced, played and teased the gopikas (milkmaids), has fine examples of poetry that portray the image of this beautiful bird."

An example of such poetry is Song XI by Vidyapati, written in the late 14th - early 15th century:

"How shall I tell of Caanou's (Krishna's) beauty bright?
Men will believe it a vision of the night.

As lightning was his saffron garment blown
Over the beautiful cloud-limbs half shown.

His coal-black curls assumed with regal grace
A peacock's plume above that moonlike face.

And such a fragrance fierce the mad wind wafts
Love wakes and trembles for his flowery shafts.

Yea, what shall words do, friend ? Love's whole estate
Exhausted was that wonder to create. "
- Taken from "the Songs of Vidyapati" by Sri Aurobindo

About buckwheat hull filling (from the Monastery Store):

"A cushion filled with buckwheat hulls is more versatile than one filled with kapok since it can shift more easily to accommodate body contours. Over time, the hulls may crumble a bit and additional hulls can be added to maintain the height." Buy 5 -6 pounds.

About kapok filling (from the Monastery Store):

Less expensive. "Initially quite firm and overfilled to allow for compression with use. A break-in period is needed before it becomes comfortable. Additional kapok may be added as required." Buy 2 -3 pounds.
